What is Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction involves the complete removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. The procedure can be simple or surgical, depending on the condition of the tooth.
- Simple Extractions: A simple extraction is performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth. A local anesthesia is used and the dentist uses a device called an elevator to loosen the tooth before removing it with forceps.
- Surgical Extractions: These are performed on teeth that are not easily accessible, such as impacted wisdom teeth or teeth that are broken at the gumline. They can be done either with local anesthesia or under sedation. The dentist or surgeon makes an incision in the gum to access the tooth. The tooth itself may have to be cut into smaller pieces or some bone may even have to be removed, depending on the position of the tooth.
Who Needs Tooth Extraction?
There are several possible reasons for a tooth extraction. You may need to have a tooth extracted if you have one of the following:
- Advanced or recurrent decay: When a tooth cannot be restored by a filling, a crown or a root canal, extraction may be the only way to prevent the spread of infection.
- Periodontal disease: Advanced gum disease can cause teeth to become loose due to bone loss, necessitating extraction.
- Trauma to one or more teeth: Teeth that are broken due to an accident and cannot be repaired may require extraction.
- Wisdom tooth impaction: Wisdom teeth are commonly removed when they are impacted or when they cause overcrowding in the mouth. Wisdom tooth removal is probably the most popular form of extraction.
Tooth Extraction Procedure
In general, the procedure for a simple tooth extraction takes less than 30 minutes and the dentist or oral surgeon will carry out the following steps:
- Numb the tooth & gums
- Administer conscious IV sedation for fearful patients (optional)
- Gently remove the tooth
- Clean out any infected areas
- Suture the site if needed.
Surgical extractions are more complex and can take considerably longer. The exact duration of a surgical extraction will depend on the specifics of your case.
Proper Care After Tooth Extraction
Once a tooth is extracted, the patient must take special care of the extraction site, especially for the first few days.
- A gauze pad will be placed over the extraction site and must be kept there for about 30 to 45 minutes, replacing it if needed.
- Pain and discomfort are often experienced after an extraction. These are not usually severe and can be managed with over-the-counter medication.
- For the first few days, avoid hot, spicy or crunchy foods and stick to a diet of liquids and soft foods such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, cream cheese, etc. When drinking, do not use a straw, as the sucking action can dislodge the blood clot and cause a painful condition known as dry socket.
